Comrade Philip Shaibu has responded to his removal from office as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, condemning it as unlawful and a danger to the country’s democratic values.
According to Gatekeepers News, Shaibu was impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, following the acceptance of the report from a seven-member investigative panel tasked with examining allegations of misconduct against him.
The impeachment process concluded with a dramatic vote that led to Shaibu’s removal from office.
“In addressing the recent developments in our state, I come before you with a heavy heart but also with unwavering determination. I strongly denounce the unconstitutional impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly based on unfounded allegations. This is not only an assault on my person but also on the fundamental principles of democracy,” Shaibu declared.
“This represents a dangerous slide towards authoritarianism, posing a threat to the very foundation of our democratic system. It must be understood that this impeachment was orchestrated due to my intention to contest the Edo Governorship election in 2024 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”
Meanwhile, State Governor Godwin Obaseki has nominated Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, a 37-year-old Engineer, to succeed Shaibu.
