The controversial figure known as Bobrisky, whose real name is Okuneye Idris, was convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, April 5, 2024, after pleading guilty to charges of currency abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The EFCC filed a six-count charge against Bobrisky, with the initial four counts relating to currency abuse, and the remaining two counts concerning alleged money laundering.
Before presenting the charges, the EFCC prosecutor requested the court to dismiss counts five and six.
Bobrisky admitted guilt to the four counts of currency abuse. However, he requested clemency, asserting that he was unaware of the laws governing currency abuse and pledged to educate his social media followers about it.
“I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. I will create a video on my platform to educate people about currency spraying. I promise not to repeat this mistake again, Your Honor. I regret my actions, Your Honor. This is my first offense,” he stated.
As a result, Justice Abimbola Awogboro scheduled his sentencing for April 9, 2024, and ordered that he be held in EFCC custody until then.
Bobrisky was previously arrested and detained by the EFCC on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. According to the commission, Bobrisky was summoned following a video report showing him spraying new Naira notes at the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s movie titled ‘Ajakaju’, held at FilmOne Circle Mall, Lekki, Lagos, on March 24, 2024.
