In a startling revelation, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have sounded the alarm over what they describe as systemic mismanagement within the Road Traffic Services Directorate.
At the core of the issue are a multitude of concerns arising from deviations from the approved scheme of service, fueling discontent and prompting scrutiny over professionalism and accountability.
The genesis of this outcry can be traced back to the 40th meeting of the National Council on Establishment (NCE), convened from March 12th to 16th, 2018.
It was during this significant assembly that the creation of the Vehicle Inspection Officer cadre was endorsed, with the intention of accommodating individuals with diverse educational backgrounds, ranging from university degree holders to diploma and secondary school certificate holders.
Despite these seemingly progressive initiatives, disconcerting reports have surfaced regarding the Directorate’s failure to adhere strictly to the endorsed scheme of service.
Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) have expressed their disillusionment with what they perceive as a deterioration in professionalism, particularly in critical areas such as appointments, career progression, and task assignments.
Of particular concern is the appointment of administrative personnel lacking the necessary expertise to supervise professional duties.
VIOs argue that such appointments not only undermine the efficiency and integrity of the Road Traffic Services but also violate established Public Service Rules, hindering their ability to effectively apply their acquired skills and knowledge.
Adding fuel to the fire is the recent rollout of the “SELF SERVICE PORTAL,” intended to streamline operations within the Directorate.
However, this initiative has come under scrutiny, with VIOs alleging that plate numbers are being allocated based on financial bids rather than adhering to established procedures.
Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding the allocation of surplus funds from these transactions, raising doubts about transparency and accountability.
In response to these mounting challenges, VIOs are urging the FCT Management to undertake a comprehensive reassessment and realignment of the Road Traffic Services Department.
They emphasize the urgent need for adherence to established protocols and a renewed commitment to professionalism, stressing that these measures are essential to ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians navigating the streets of the Federal Capital Territory.
