The Dosumu Onikoyi ruling house has officially chosen Hon. Moshood Olanrewaju Mayegun as the Oba-Elect for the vacant Onikoyi of Ikoyi and Imoba Land stool.
Alhaji Abidemi Idris Duale presented him at a well-attended forum with members of the Jinnadu Agbeti and Fagbemi ruling families under the Dosumu lineage.
Describing the Oba-Elect, Alhaji Idris Duale highlighted his high intellectual capacity, dignity, and reputable grassroots political involvement.
He emphasized that Hon. Mayegun did not actively seek the position; rather, the entire family sought after him.
Alhaji Mohammed Lawal shared insights into the selection process, involving virtual meetings among Jinadu Agbeti and Fagbemi Ruling Houses, culminating in a voting session.
Contestants for the position included Idris Onikoyi, Taofik Ope Onikoyi, Alhaji Idowu Johnson Onikoyi, Ganiyu Onikoyi, and Hon. Moshood Mayegun.
Following the passing of the late Onikoyi, Oba Patrick Ibikunle Fafunwa on November 19, 2023, the votes favored Hon. Moshood Mayegun with seven votes, while Ganiyu Onikoyi received three votes.
Alhaji Mohammed Lawal revealed that Ganiyu Onikoyi gracefully conceded defeat and congratulated Mayegun after the election.
In his remarks, former House of Representatives member Hon. Abayomi Mayegun commended the transparent and fair process of selecting Oba-Elect Moshood Mayegun. He expressed optimism that the ruling house would greatly benefit if Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu accepts him as the new Onikoyi of Ikoyi and Imoba Land.
Prince Fatai Adio Lawal, the Olokun Ishagbe of Lagos, endorsed the selection of Hon. Moshood Mayegun as the Oba-Elect.
Responding, Oba-Elect Hon. Moshood Olanrewaju Mayegun expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the ruling house, acknowledging the challenging journey made possible by the support of God and family members who believed in him.
He vowed never to disappoint, ensuring that no one would be left behind. Emphasizing that the position is not his personal property but a custodianship of the stool, he pledged to unite the Dosumu-Onikoyi and extend fellowship to all.
Highlighting the nature of contests, he stated that a winner must emerge, clarifying that two or more persons cannot be crowned simultaneously.
Family members from Abari, Jabita, Agbeti, Omolade Fagbemi, Adamo Fagbemi, and Amusa Fagbemi sections of Dosunmu Ruling House attended the presentation.
The Onikoyi of Ikoyi and Imoba Land’s throne became vacant after Oba Patrick Ibikunle Fafunwa passed away on November 19, 2023.
