In the vibrant tapestry of Nigeria’s cultural and societal landscape, the alarming phenomenon of moral decadence among the youth has taken center stage. The very essence of the nation’s future is at stake as this issue grows like a cancer, silently eroding the values that have long held the society together. It is a call to action, a wake-up call to address the question: what has befallen the youths of Nigeria?

Nigeria, a nation known for its rich history, diverse cultures, and resilient people, is now grappling with the unsettling reality of moral decay. The very fabric of moral values that once guided generations is now fraying, as traditional virtues give way to a wave of negative influences. The youth, who are the hope and torchbearers of the nation, find themselves ensnared in this web of decadence.

The digital age, while opening up vast opportunities, has also exposed the youth to an overwhelming influx of foreign values, unchecked information, and pop culture that often glorifies hedonism.

The desperate quest for quick success has, in some cases, led to the youths’ involvement in cybercrime, fraud, same-sex sexual relationship and other illicit activities. This vicious cycle of moral erosion driven by socio-economic challenges further perpetuates the problem. In all of these, the parents are not helping matters.

Parents are supposed to be every child’s first teachers and role models, responsible for shaping up their behavior and implementing positive values in them through punishment, reinforcement, and both direct and indirect teaching, instill morals and help them to develop beliefs that reflect the values of their culture.

I remember growing up as a kid. I was sent on errands by my mum. On my way, I saw money on the ground, a kobo to be precise back then. I picked it up, took it home to show my mother what I found on my way. My behavior didnโ€™t sit well with her.

The kind of beating I received was out of this world, for daring to pick the money. She followed me back to where I picked the money with cane in hands. I still have scares of that beatings on my body. That was parenting back then but they call it child abuse in this modern age.

Youths are now the breadwinners of their families, hence the parents donโ€™t see anything wrong in social vices.

Aside yahoo yahoo and hook up, one of the contentious issue contributing to moral decadence is the shift in attitudes towards LGBTQ+ practices and same-sex marriage. These concepts directly clash with Nigeria’s deeply ingrained cultural and religious values, resulting in societal friction.

Nigerian law criminalizes same-sex relationships, and the debate over whether to accommodate these practices highlights the ongoing struggle between modernity, personal freedom, and preserving traditional norms. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Anti-gay Law of 2014 stipulates a 14-year prison term for anyone convicted of having sex with members of the same sex.

On Tuesday, 29 August, 2023, the Delta State Police Command arrested over 100 suspected homosexuals carrying out a wedding ceremony in a hotel in Delta state.

Since signing the anti-gay law in 2014, people believed to be homosexuals have been arrested and paraded by security operatives.

In December 2020, the Lagos State Police Command arrested 10 individuals suspected of homosexual activities in a brothel located in the Okota area of the state.

Earlier in 2018, the police in the state paraded 57 men for alleged homosexual activities at Kelly Ann Hotel in Egbeda.

In January 2022, eight alleged homosexuals were arrested in a hotel in Isolo, Lagos for alleged gay activities.

Under existing Nigerian federal law, sodomy is punishable by jail. The bill contains penalties of up to 14 years in prison. The law is in line with our cultural and religious beliefs as a people because gay marriage is not only unbiblical, it is unchristian, sinful, satanic and unholy and brings Godโ€™s curse and anger on humanity.

Therefore, offenders must be made to face the full wrath of the law to serve as deterrent to others who might be nursing such satanic intentions in the nearest future.

The erosion of moral values among Nigerian youth has far-reaching implications for society. The breakdown of family structures, increased crime rates, and a loss of social cohesion are some of the consequences that stem from these behaviors. Additionally, the tarnished reputation of the country due to cybercrimes and fraudulent activities poses a significant hurdle to its economic progress and international relationships.

Addressing moral decadence among Nigerian youth requires a multi-pronged approach. Education plays a vital role in shaping values and promoting ethical behavior. Schools, religious institutions, and community organizations should collaborate to provide comprehensive moral education that fosters empathy, critical thinking, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Moreover, fostering open dialogues about the consequences of destructive behaviors is crucial. Creating safe spaces where young individuals can discuss their challenges and concerns without judgment can help redirect their energies towards positive pursuits.

The moral decadence among Nigerian youth is a complex issue that demands attention from all sectors of society. By understanding the root causes, fostering open conversations, and reinforcing positive values through education and community engagement, Nigeria can hope to restore its moral compass. The phrase “Youths Who Have Bewitched You” serves as a wake-up call, urging the country to come together to guide its youth towards a brighter, more ethical future.
