On Saturday, 30 April, the legendary La Liga will air the top match for this round, which sees Athletic Bilbao welcome Atletico Madrid to San Mames Barria at 8pm on SuperSport La Liga (DStv channel 204 and GOtv channel 32) for a ‘red and white derby’.
European qualification looks beyond Athletic’s reach, but they will still be keen to put a spanner in the works for outgoing champions Atletico. The Basque club has put together a three-game unbeaten run against the capital city side, including a 2-1 win in the Spanish Super Cup in January 2022 – the teams’ most recent meeting.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, will welcome Espanyol to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu at 3:15pm on SuperSport La Liga and target another victory in their successful La Liga campaign – though goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has warned his team not to take anything for granted. “To win is very important,” Courtois explained. “We have lacked intensity at times and must make sure we correct this.”
On Sunday, 1 May, Barcelona will welcome Mallorca to Camp Nou at 8pm on SuperSport La Liga and SuperSport Football (DStv channel 205 & GOtv channel 31) and look to continue the fine form they have shown under manager Xavi, who is urging his charges to keep pushing right until the end of the season. “We won and we enjoyed ourselves,” said the Blaugrana club legend. “The atmosphere was extraordinary. And we’ll keep fighting. We’re going to try. We’re going to try to win all the games.”
Another key clash sees Sevilla host Cadiz at Estadio Ram Sanchez Pizjuan for an Andalusian derby on Friday, 29 April at 8pm on SuperSport La Liga. Los Nervionenses are chasing a top-four finish and have been an excellent team under manager Julen Lopetegui, who recently dismissed links with the Manchester United managerial post for next season.
“The [speculation], I can’t help it,” Lopetegui said. “I am where I want to be. Continue on the Sevilla bench next season? I have no doubt.”
The top clash from this weekend in Serie A is AC Milan’s home clash against Fiorentina at the San Siro on Sunday, 1 May at 2pm on SuperSport Football. The Rossoneri are chasing a first league title since 2011 and need all three points to remain on track, while La Viola look more than likely to end in mid-table and have little to fight for.
Nonetheless, Milan boss Stefano Pioli is urging his team to put the processes ahead of the result: “We must not play with anxiety, fear and presumption, but with strength and conviction,” said the veteran tactician.
Title rivals Internazionale and Napoli have their own tests in this round to pass: the Nerazzurri will be away to Udinese at the Dacia Arena at 5pm on SuperSport Football and SuperSport Select 1 (GOtv channel 33), while the Neapolitans will welcome Sassuolo on Saturday to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at 2pm on SuperSport Football and SuperSport Select 1.
Inter manager Simone Inzaghi is determined to see his side fight all the way to the end of the season: “We can chase Milan and Napoli. We have lost some points that we will try to earn in the last games from now to the end. It is still very long, [Milan and Napoli] are the favourites, but some will say that it is us.”
Former Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi believes Napoli are still in with a shot at their first title since 1990. “[Napoli] impressed me with their intensity, their ideas and two players: [Stanislav] Lobotka and [Alessandro] Zanoli,” said Sacchi. “Now they must prove to have this quality every time, it will be crucial in the race for the title.”
Elsewhere, Roma will host Bologna on Sunday at 7:45pm on SuperSport Football and SuperSport Select 1 and look to boost their hopes of finishing ahead of Lazio on the table. Le Aquile will be away to Spezia on Saturday at 7:45pm on SuperSport Football and SuperSport Select 1, who boast a sought-after forward in Ghanaian Emmanuel Gyasi. The 28-year-old has been a key player for the Liguria team and is a fan favourite.
