The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the commencement of preparations for the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, with the formal issuance of the statutory Notice of Election on Tuesday.

Speaking at a meeting with political parties, civil society groups, and the media held at the INEC Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, said the announcement was in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), which mandates the Commission to issue a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the scheduled election.

Dr. Omoseyindemi explained that the Commission had earlier, on May 30, 2025, through its National Chairman, announced the approval of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States. He noted that the tenures of the incumbent governors of both states, elected in 2022, are expected to end next year.

“The publication of the Notice of Election today at the INEC State Office and across all 16 Local Government Area offices in Ekiti State marks the official kick-off of activities towards the 2026 poll,” the REC stated.

He emphasized that the detailed Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the Ekiti election have been uploaded on the Commission’s website and social media platforms for easy access by political parties and the public.

Describing the meeting as “both symbolic and strategic,” Dr. Omoseyindemi said it signals the beginning of the electoral process and presents an opportunity for early engagement with key stakeholders. He urged political parties to conduct their activities—especially party primaries and campaign processes—in strict compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC’s guidelines.

“To the media, we count on your professionalism and objectivity in reporting the electoral process and in countering misinformation, fake news, and inciting narratives that could undermine public confidence,” he added.

The REC also assured the people of Ekiti State that INEC remains committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible governorship election in 2026.

“We will continue to engage with stakeholders at all levels and keep the channels of communication open as we journey together towards 2026,” he said.

The meeting was attended by leaders of registered political parties, members of the press, representatives of civil society organizations, and senior INEC officials in the state.

The governorship election in Ekiti State is expected to hold mid-2026, although the exact date will be confirmed in the Commission’s schedule of activities.
