As Nigeria marks Children’s Day 2025, Heartminders Initiative, a leading NGO in child protection and advocacy, calls on all stakeholders—parents, government, caregivers, and the broader society—to renew their commitment to safeguarding children against the growing threats of abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.

Speaking on the significance of the day, Funke Ijayekunle, Founder and Executive Director of Heartminders Initiative, emphasized that “Children’s Day is not just a celebration—it’s a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect the most vulnerable among us. In our work with communities across Nigeria, we continue to witness heartbreaking cases of abuse, neglect, and trafficking. It must stop.”

Heartminders Initiative has remained at the forefront of advocacy and public education on child welfare, social protection, and girl-child empowerment. On this year’s Children’s Day, the organization reiterates the following calls to action:

• To Parents and Caregivers: Prioritize open communication with your children. Equip them with age-appropriate information about boundaries, safety, and how to seek help.

• To Government and Law Enforcement: Strengthen child protection systems, enforce trafficking laws, and provide adequate support to victims.

• To Older Siblings and Community Members: Watch out for signs of abuse. Create a culture where children feel safe and heard.

“As a nation, we must rise to protect our children. They are our future, and their safety is non-negotiable,” Ijayekunle added.

Heartminders Initiative continues to advocate for a Nigeria where every child can grow free from fear and with access to education, safety, and opportunity.
