Popular Nigerian singer, Teniola Apata, widely known as Teni, has shared details of her recent battle with illness, emphasizing that money cannot buy good health.
In a video posted on Instagram on Wednesday, the ‘Money’ crooner revealed that she was down with malaria for two weeks but still had to fulfill a music performance commitment.
Recalling her ordeal, she humorously said, “When I sang ‘Uyo Meyo’ and said, ‘Ohun toju mi ti ri ah’ (What my eyes have seen), I thought I had seen it all, but malaria showed me pepper! E no go better for all the mosquitoes wey dey for Ikate. Oba, please do something about the mosquitoes in Ikate because malaria had me down.”
Teni recounted how she lost her appetite and jokingly said she almost asked her mother to wake her late father at his burial site to come to her rescue.
“I almost called my mum to turn off the AC at my father’s burial ground because it felt like he wanted to take a nap. I said, ‘Wake up, your daughter is dying!’ I was weak for two weeks. I couldn’t eat,” she said.
She also noted how the illness took a toll on her appearance. “If you people see my neck now, I look like tolotolo (turkey),” she joked.
Despite her condition, Teni revealed that she still traveled to Ondo State for a scheduled performance because she couldn’t afford to return the payment she had received.
“I went to perform in Ondo while I was sick because who will feed me? Look at me, I was dying but still dancing and singing ‘For Your Case’ because I cannot return money,” she said.
She added, “Any money that enters my account, especially the sugar mummy account, does not come back out. And they say money is the root of all evil. E no go better for evil!”
Accompanying her post was the caption: “Money cannot buy you health o, na God.”
