Former President Barack Obama congratulated Republican Donald Trump on his presidential victory, acknowledging the unexpected outcome.
“We want to congratulate President Trump and Senator Vance on their victory,” Obama said in a joint statement with his wife, Michelle. “This is not the result we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on numerous issues.”
The Obamas emphasized the importance of democracy, which requires accepting peaceful transitions of power, even when one’s perspective doesn’t prevail.
Throughout the final days of the campaign, Obama was a strong advocate for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, highlighting her commitment to the people while criticizing Trump’s privileged background and financial setbacks.
Reflecting on recent national struggles, including the pandemic, inflation, and economic uncertainty, Obama noted these challenges have impacted democratic leaders worldwide and showed that “America is not immune.”
“Progress calls for us to extend good faith and grace even to those with whom we disagree deeply,” Obama wrote. “That’s how we’ve come this far, and it’s how we’ll continue to build a fairer, more just, equal, and free country.”
