A pan-Lagos group, the Lagos People’s Assembly (LPA), has commended the people of the state for maintaining peace and shunning violence during Day 1 of the End Hunger protest in Lagos.
The LPA also praised the state Governor, Mr. Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu, for his proactive approach in engaging in preventive meetings with critical stakeholders and appealing for calm and peaceful conduct during the protest. They described him as a “competent crisis manager.”
In a press release by its Convener, Comrade Gbenga Soloki, the LPA acknowledged the right of individuals to protest peacefully. The group also appealed to the protest organizers to halt the protest, given that they had made their points and seen the government’s willingness to listen. The LPA urged the government to address the protesters’ requests.
The group noted that the unfavorable economic situation is not restricted to Nigeria or Lagos alone but is a global issue that countries are addressing with various strategies.
In his words, “On behalf of the LPA, let me commend Lagosians for heeding our call to maintain peace during the protest. The peaceful conduct of the people and protesters is commendable, as Lagos is a peaceful state, and the protest occurred without any disturbing incidents.”
“We must also salute the doggedness, commitment, and proactive nature of the Governor, who went out of his way to meet critical stakeholders in the state. Truly, Governor Sanwo-Olu is a crisis manager. His engagements made all the difference, and we must not fail to salute his crisis management prowess.”
“While we believe in the right of people to protest and acknowledge that the issues raised are important, it is essential to engage the government constructively on the way forward. These demands cannot be addressed immediately but must be carefully planned and executed.”
The LPA promised to continue monitoring events as they unfold and to regularly provide its opinions and directives.
