…Calls for urgent Government action to tame social media menace
In the wake of rising social media-related crimes and the proliferation of fake news, the Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, on Environment, Information and Civic Engagement, Mr. Olayiwola Rasheed Jebba Hamilton, has made a passionate appeal to the government, sounding the alarm on the dangers of unregulated social media.
Drawing inspiration from global examples like China, the European Union, and India, Olayiwola emphasizes the need for Nigeria to take proactive measures, by establishing a regulatory framework to govern social media, so as to ensure online safety and security.
The proposed regulation would encompass the establishment of a regulatory body to oversee social media platforms, development of clear guidelines and standards for social media use, and implementation of measures to prevent the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
Additionally, Olayiwola also advocates for laws to prevent cyberbullying and online harassment, education and awareness programs on digital literacy and online safety, and collaboration with social media platforms to ensure compliance with regulations.
“The need for regulation is underscored by the growing concerns about national security, online harassment, and the spread of false information. As Nigeria navigates the challenges of the digital age, it is crucial for the government to take proactive measures to ensure online safety and security.
“My call to action is a timely reminder of the importance of regulation in maintaining social order and promoting responsible social media use” Olayiwola warned. “The future of our nation’s online safety and security depends on it”, he maintained.
