Last Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took a significant step towards ensuring accountability and performance in his government by making his Ministers sign a performance bond. This commendable action has the potential to reignite hope in the hearts of Nigerians and make them believe that a new Nigeria is possible.

The decision to implement a performance bond is a clear indication that the President is committed to delivering on his promises to the Nigerian people. It is a step in the right direction, signaling a strong message that the era of excuses and nonchalance in governance is gone. Nigeria must work again, and this initiative will ensure that.

One of the key benefits of the performance bond is its ability to provide real-time oversight capability for the benefit of all Nigerians. With this measure in place, the government will have a mechanism to hold non-performing Ministers accountable. It will no longer be business as usual, where contractors collect money from the government purse without fulfilling their contractual agreements. This move will bring about diligence and efficiency in the work of the Ministers.

It is crucial for Nigerians to take ownership of government properties in their localities, as these are built with taxpayers’ money. Nonchalant attitudes towards government projects should be done away with, and instead, a sense of responsibility and pride in these projects should be fostered. We must also monitor the quality of jobs done by contractors, rather than focusing solely on quantity. In this era of social media, Nigerians have the power to put contractors in check by reporting any shoddy jobs carried out.

Now more than ever, it is essential for Nigerians to support the government. A new Nigeria is possible, and this move towards accountability and performance is a testament to that. By standing behind the government and actively participating in the monitoring and reporting of projects, we can contribute to the transformation of our nation.

Let us embrace this opportunity to create a new Nigeria, where the government works for the people and the people take pride in their nation. Together, we can make a difference.
