Since majority of Nigerians now see hopes and opportunities abroad, the economy condition is deteriorating, and the government and its officials are not really bothered about the citizens; why will the population not finally decrease to less than 20 Million?
Developed countries like U.S.A, U.K, Canada and others are currently accepting qualified Nigerians. The United States and The United Kingdom have the highest number of Nigerian in diaspora. Most of the migrants went there in search for greener pastures and they seem to be living fine.
Do we even know that these developed countries are even using immigrants to develop their countries the more? For instance, the United Kingdom issued 486,868 Sponsored study visas in the year ending June 2022. Out of the 486,868 Sponsored study visas granted, Nigerian students were granted 65,929 visas. As an international student, you will be required to pay within the range £12,000 to £35,000 on average. So we can imagine if such amounts are paid by at least 50,000 people (because there are numerous full and partial scholarships, research grants, loans, and sponsorships available for international students) as tuition fee.
Although there is a high chance of recovering the money when you start working.
Moving on, countries like Canada and U.K are accepting qualified Nigerians into their medical and healthcare sector, manufacturing sector, Industrial sector, engineering sector etc. Since they pay well and their currency is way higher than our Naira. A Nigerian friend of mine works in a tissue paper manufacturing factory in Italy, and he is been paid €9 per hour. He works 7 hours a day and 22 days in a month. He earns €63 daily and €1386 at the end of the month. He told me if tax is removed from his salary the amount he is left with if calculated to Naira is #920,000. Although he stays with his mum who earns 3 times higher than him because she has a university certificate.
If such good opportunities and offers are abroad, the economy of Nigeria is nothing to write home about, insecurity rate is snowballing and there is an increase in unemployment rate, who will want to remain in Nigeria? No one! I’ve been contemplating leaving the country too. This is bad for Nigeria is such useful individuals can be leaving the country for a country where they feel their services are well appreciated.
The Nigerian government needs to look into this alarming issues and take necessary measures like: Job creation to reduce unemployment, set policies that will attract foreign investors, infrastructural development and maintenance, ensure there is adequate electricity, ensure strict adherence to the rule of law, install qualified security agencies, ensure the public and civil servants work without political interference. Thus, no one will see emigration as a means of escaping poverty.
