The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) has called for a nationwide campaign against sexual abuse and domestic violence to protect the girl child and ensure justice for survivors.
The centre made the call in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Gbenga Soloki, to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child.
CAIDOV described the girl child as a symbol of hope, strength and the nation’s future, lamenting that millions of girls in Nigeria continue to suffer sexual abuse, domestic violence, child marriage and cultural discrimination.
The organisation stressed that the theme of this year’s celebration must translate into concrete actions to protect girls from abuse at home and in society, rather than remain a subject of speeches.
“It is painful that the home, which should be the safest place for a girl, has become a place of fear for many. Fathers, uncles, neighbours and even teachers have turned into abusers.
“The culture of silence, stigmatisation of victims and slow justice system have emboldened perpetrators. This must stop,” the statement said.
The centre called for a nationwide campaign against all forms of sexual and domestic violence in schools, markets, places of worship and communities.
It also advocated mandatory reporting mechanisms and protection measures for teachers and guardians to strengthen efforts to prevent and address abuse.
Additionally, CAIDOV called for the speedy trial of sexual offence cases, the public identification of convicted sexual offenders and increased funding for shelters, counselling and legal assistance for survivors.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to providing legal assistance, psychosocial support and advocacy for victims of domestic and sexual violence across Lagos State and Nigeria.
It urged girls to speak out and report cases of abuse without shame, assuring them that support is available and justice is possible.
“Every girl deserves to grow without fear, to learn without intimidation, and to dream without limitations. Protecting her from violence is not charity, it is justice,” the statement added.
