Nigeria’s former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retired), has disclosed that the late General Sani Abacha-led forces annulled the June 12, 1993, presidential election while he was away.
Babangida made this revelation in his autobiography, A Journey in Service, launched on Thursday in Abuja. The event featured former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, as the book reviewer.
According to Babangida, the annulment of the election—won by the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola—was carried out without his authorization.
He recounted that while he was in Katsina, the Press Secretary to his then deputy, Retired Admiral Ebitu Ukiwe, issued a statement declaring the election void, unbeknownst to him.
He later learned that Abacha, who was the Chief of Defence Staff at the time, was the mastermind behind the move to overturn the election results.
