Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Oshodi Constituency 01, has reaffirmed the legislature’s unwavering support for the newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, following the impeachment of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa on January 13, 2025.
In a statement released on Saturday, Hon. Ogundipe emphasized that over two-thirds of the Assembly’s members stand firmly behind the decision to remove Obasa and are prepared to defend their stance to the very end.
According to him, the Assembly remains committed to providing good governance and fostering a harmonious relationship with other arms of government, as mandated by their roles as representatives of the people.
“The position of the House remains unchanged,” Hon. Ogundipe stated. “The majority of members elected Rt. Hon. Obasa as Speaker for the 10th Assembly, and the same majority, at a duly convened plenary session, decided to remove him. We now stand firmly with Rt. Hon. Meranda as the new Speaker.”
He described Obasa’s recent actions as “uncalled for and unparliamentary” and called on the former Speaker to adopt a peaceful approach, aligning with the stance of other members. “We were all elected from our respective constituencies and have the statutory rights to make decisions regarding our leadership, including the removal of principal officers,” he noted.
Hon. Ogundipe warned that any attempt to destabilize the Assembly or create political tension would be resisted by the majority.
He stressed the need for peace and urged all parties to work towards stability in Lagos.
“Peace is what we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” he concluded.
