Encomium poured in as Professor Abdur-Rahman Olayiwola, the pioneer Head of Department of Political Science in Lagos State University (LASU) retired from active service and as well celebrated his 70th birthday.
Prof. Olayiwola who recently gave the University’s 98th inaugural lecture titled “Political Communication and Political Complications in Nigeria: Analysis and Action”, was celebrated by his students, professional colleagues and friends.
One of the tributes written by the undergraduate students of the department, the renowned Political Scientist was described as “embodiment of political dictionary”.
The students added ” Your intellectual sageness is enough to illuminate unexplored paths, and your dedication to the pursuit of knowledge continues to inspire countless minds. Being a mentor, a guide, and a loving father, you have left an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege of learning under your tutelage.
“On this special day, we honor your contributions to academia, your unwavering commitment to excellence, and the legacy of integrity you embody.
” May your birthday herald a new year of good health, abundant joy, and unceasing fulfillment. May the candles you blow out today illuminate the path for even greater achievements for the coming generation.
“Happy Birthday, Professor Olayiwola. The legacy you have bequeathed continues to shine through those whose lives you have enriched”.
Another tribute from the Post Graduate Students read “Happy birthday to a mentor, an academic father, a scholar per excellence, a leader, a man of virtue, an insightful intellectual whose determination, persistence and patience are awe inspiring.

An Islamic Cleric, Imam Umoru Ayatu Momoh, in his tribute, said ” Happy birthday to my erudite scholar, a perfect description of a true pathfinder with a unique leadership character, owing to your anticidents and unarguably admirable resume of enviable achievements, a perfect blend of intellectualism and integrity.
“My Prof, your kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, honesty and dedication to humanity, are some of the key values l admire the most about you.
“May your new age brings you happiness, laughter, promotion, favour, opportunities, peace, good health and enormous joy throughout every moment of your life.

In 1984, Prof. Olayiwola started lecturing in the Department of Political Science and is the first lecturer to deliver the first University lecture in that year.
Prof. Olayiwola had his first and second degrees in Political Science from University of Ibadan before proceeding to the London School of Economics and Political Science in London, United Kingdom for his Doctorate degree. He also attended University of North London where he bagged Postgraduate Diploma in Law/Legal Studies, the Anglia Polytechnic University (APU) Chelmsford ESSEX UK where he obtained PGD in Legal Practice.
In London, he served as Councilor and also as Chairman of Borough and Bankside Borough Community Council. He has authored many books on Politics, Political Communications, Comparative Politics, Comparative Federalism amongst others. He served in the Executive Committee of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) between 1986 and 1987.
