FACEBOOK has uncovered a coordinated campaign using dozens of phony accounts apparently designed to sway political opinion on its site heading into November’s elections, a report said Tuesday.
The social media giant is preparing to announce the alarming discovery on Tuesday afternoon following a week of briefing Washington lawmakers on its investigation into similar interference ahead of the 2016 presidential election, The New York Times reported, citing sources briefed on the situation.
Facebook’s internal probe uncovered the current campaign while looking into the 2016 interference, which has been linked to Russia and its Internet Research Agency, the report said.
They have yet to determine who is behind the most recent coordinated campaign attempting to put its thumb on the scales of the upcoming midterm elections, the report said.
Facebook has been working with the FBI to investigate the suspicious activity, according to the paper.
