In a groundbreaking development, Rt. Hon. Soniregun Maria Itunu, a native of Agege, has shattered barriers by becoming the first female Speaker of the 5th Lagos State Youth Parliament.
She emerged after a historic election which took place on February 21, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the youth political landscape of Lagos.
Soniregun not only assumed the mantle of leadership as the youngest honorable member of the 5th Assembly but also secures her place in history as the pioneering female Speaker.
Representing Agege constituency 01, Shoniregun’s victory symbolizes a triumph for gender equality and youth empowerment, while her historic political triumph not only breaks gender stereotypes but also serves as an inspiration for the girl child, young female students and women across Lagos and beyond, as her journey from a grassroots upbringing in Agege to the pinnacle of political leadership exemplifies the transformative power of dedication, resilience, and unwavering determination.
Prior to her remarkable achievement, Soniregun distinguished herself as an undergraduate student at the prestigious Lagos State University (LASU) and as the former Assistant Head Girl of Government Senior College, Agege.
Her track record of academic excellence and leadership prowess undoubtedly laid the foundation for her ascent to such a prestigious position.
In her acceptance speech, she pledged to work towards positive change and effective representation of youth interests in Lagos State.
She also expressed her gratitude to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa; the Commissioner for Youth of Lagos State, Mobolaji Ogunlende; and Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Oluwagbenga Abiola.
She acknowledged the first female Speaker of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Azeezat Yishawu, whom she regards as a role model.
She emphasized the importance of unity, hard work, and perseverance, and urged her fellow youth to always dream big and never give up on their goals.
