{"id":9932,"date":"2022-08-16T21:41:18","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T21:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=9932"},"modified":"2022-08-16T21:41:18","modified_gmt":"2022-08-16T21:41:18","slug":"strike-to-continue-as-asuu-fg-meeting-ends-in-deadlock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=9932","title":{"rendered":"Strike To Continue As ASUU-FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Tuesday\u2019s meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government has again ended without an agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">This means the six-month old strike by public university lecturers is set to continue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The striking lecturers had met with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee on Tuesday at the National University Commission in Abuja with high hopes of resolving the impasse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A senior member of ASUU, who craved anonymity told Channels Television that members of the Briggs renegotiation committee did not come with any new offer on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Instead, the ASUU source said, the committee plead with the lecturers to suspend the ongoing strike, with promises that their concerns will be included in the 2023 budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the source, the meeting, which started at about 12pm, lasted for about three hours without any agreement reached.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\">ASUU\u2019s Demands<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">ASUU embarked on a four-week warning strike on February 14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">On March 14, the union extended the industrial action by another two months to allow the government meet all of its demands. A 12-week extension was announced on May 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Since May 9, the union has remained on strike, vowing to persist until its demands are met.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities and academic autonomy among other demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">One bone of contention for the academics is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But the Federal Government has said it doesn\u2019t have the money to pay such an amount, citing low oil prices during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The agreement was struck in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Another is the issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The academics have proposed an alternative payroll system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday\u2019s meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government has again ended without an agreement.
