{"id":8443,"date":"2022-05-26T21:20:09","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T21:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=8443"},"modified":"2022-05-26T21:20:09","modified_gmt":"2022-05-26T21:20:09","slug":"tragedy-11-babies-die-in-hospital-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=8443","title":{"rendered":"Tragedy! 11 Babies Die In Hospital Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Eleven newborn babies died in a hospital blaze in the western Senegalese city of Tivaouane late on Wednesday, President Macky Sall said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI have just learned with pain and dismay about the deaths of 11 newborn babies in the fire at the neonatal department of the public hospital,\u201d Sall wrote on Twitter just before midnight (0000 GMT).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cTo their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy,\u201d he tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The tragedy occurred at Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital in the transport hub of Tivaouane, and was caused by \u201ca short circuit\u201d, health minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr was quoted in media reports as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The maternity unit was equipped to take care of 13 babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cAt the time of the fire, there were 11, whom nurses were unable to save,\u201d the minister said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">But according to the city\u2019s mayor, Demba Diop, \u201cthree babies were saved\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cMy son was christened yesterday. He was only nine days old. The maternity ward was full and I don\u2019t think there are any survivors,\u201d one unidentified mother told the news website, Dakaractu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted that he was \u201cbeyond heartbroken with this tragic news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI\u2019m sending my deepest condolences to the parents and families of the babies who lost their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cIt is with horror and great pain that I learned of the death of 11 newborn babies at Tivaouane hospital. Let us pray for these innocent people who have disappeared. My deepest condolences to the bereaved parents,\u201d said former prime minister Abdoul Mbaye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2013 Newly inaugurated \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">According to local media, the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital was newly inaugurated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Health minister Sarr, who had been in Geneva attending a meeting with the World Health Organization, said \u201can investigation is under way to see what happened\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The tragedy in Tivaouane comes after several other incidents at public health facilities in Senegal, where there is great disparity between urban and rural areas in healthcare services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">In the northern town of Linguere in late April, a fire broke out at a hospital and four newborn babies were killed. The town\u2019s mayor cited an electrical malfunction in an air conditioning unit in the maternity ward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The accident on Wednesday comes over a month after the nation mourned the death of a pregnant woman who waited in vain for a Caesarean section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The woman, named Astou Sokhna, had arrived at a hospital in the northern city of Louga in pain. The staff had refused to accommodate her request for a C-section, saying that it was not scheduled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">She died April 1, 20 hours after arrival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Sokhna\u2019s death caused a wave of outrage across the country over the dire state of Senegal\u2019s public health system, and health minister Sarr acknowledged two weeks later that the death could have been avoided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Three midwives \u2014 on duty the night Sokhna died \u2014 were sentenced on May 11 by the High Court of Louga to six months of suspended imprisonment for \u201cfailure to assist a person in danger\u201d in connection to her case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Amnesty International\u2019s Senegal director Seydi Gassama said his organisation had called for an inspection and upgrade for neonatology services in hospitals across Senegal after the \u201catrocious\u201d death of the four babies in Linguere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">With the new tragedy, Amnesty \u201curges the government to set up an independent commission of inquiry to determine responsibility and punish the culprits, no matter the level they are at in the state apparatus\u201d, he tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Opposition lawmaker Mamadou Lamine Diallo also responded with outrage to the Tivaouane blaze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cMore babies burned in a public hospital\u2026 this is unacceptable @MackySall,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe suffer with the families to whom we offer our condolences.
