Freiburg cruised into the first German Cup final in the club\u2019s history with a 3-1 victory at second-tier Hamburg in Tuesday\u2019s semi-final, with all their goals coming in the first half.<\/p>\n
Bundesliga side Freiburg dominated Hamburg, who have spent the last four seasons in the second division, with Nils Petersen, Nicolas\u00a0Hoefler and Vincenzo Grifo scoring in the opening 35 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n Hamburg managed a consolation goal with two minutes left when Robert\u00a0Glatzel headed in a cross.<\/span><\/p>\n There will be a new German Cup winner when the final is held at Berlin\u2019s Olympic Stadium on May 21.<\/span><\/p>\n Neither Freiburg, nor Union Berlin and RB Leipzig who meet in Wednesday\u2019s other semi-final, have previously lifted the trophy.<\/span><\/p>\n Hamburg were the only club in the semi-finals to have already won the cup, with the last of their three victories coming during the fallen giants\u2019 glory days of the 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n Hosts Hamburg were behind on just 11 minutes when Hoefler swung in a cross which Petersen headed in.<\/span><\/p>\n Hoefler then smashed in a shot which deflected off Hamburg captain Sebastian\u00a0Schonlau six minutes later.<\/span><\/p>\n Hamburg rallied, with forwards Bakery\u00a0Jatta and\u00a0Glatzel going close.<\/span><\/p>\n But Freiburg grabbed their third when Grifo converted a penalty after a foul on Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck.<\/span><\/p>\n To compound Hamburg\u2019s misery, midfielder Anssi Suhonen had a goal disallowed for offside.<\/span><\/p>\n The game\u2019s tempo dropped after the break as Freiburg\u2019s defence contained Hamburg, apart from a great chance for Suhonen who dribbled through the defence before Hoefler blocked his shot.<\/span><\/p>\n Glatzel scored a deserved late consolation for Hamburg when he headed home.<\/span><\/p>\n AFP<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Freiburg cruised into the first German Cup final in the club\u2019s history with a 3-1 victory at second-tier Hamburg in Tuesday\u2019s semi-final, with all their goals coming in the first half.
