A Lagos State High Court sitting at Ikeja on Wednesday sentenced a 33-year-old motorcyclist, Michael Ahmed, to life imprisonment for raping his 21-year-old passenger on an estate.<\/p>\n
The victim was raped by the defendant on her way from church.<\/span><\/p>\n The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the defence counsel, Mr Ramon Bashir, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, noting that the defendant had no prior criminal record.<\/span><\/p>\n Delivering judgment, Justice Hakeem Oshodi held that the prosecution proved the case against Ahmed beyond reasonable doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe evidence of the victim is concise and clear, while the defendant\u2019s evidence is distorted before the court.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHe tried to distort the facts in the timing of the incident, how he got to the police station and the name he was called on the day of the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere is clear evidence before the court that the defendant forced himself on the victim.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere is also proof before the court that the defendant bit the survivor on the shoulder.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe defendant is hereby convicted of the two counts of rape and serious assault.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe court has clearly considered the allocutus presented by the defence counsel,\u201d the judge held.<\/span><\/p>\n Justice Oshodi noted that the court had no power to pronounce a lesser sentence for convicts of rape.<\/span><\/p>\n He said, \u201cThe defendant is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment, which is the statutory sentence for rape and three years jail term for serious assault.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis should take effect from July 25, 2013, when he was in detention.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A Lagos State High Court sitting at Ikeja on Wednesday sentenced a 33-year-old motorcyclist, Michael Ahmed, to life imprisonment for raping his 21-year-old passenger on an estate.
