The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has extended its petrol discount at retail outlets nationwide until October 31, clarifying that the initiative is not a restoration of the discontinued fuel subsidy.<\/p>\n
The company said the extension was aimed at cushioning the impact of rising global crude oil prices on Nigerians, amid market uncertainties linked to the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
NNPC\u2019s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, October 9, 2026.<\/p>\n
According to Odeh, the company introduced the discount on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria\u2019s 66th Independence Anniversary but decided to sustain the initiative following the Federal Government\u2019s renewed efforts to ease the burden of rising petrol prices on households and businesses.<\/p>\n
The extension follows a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, announcing additional measures to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices.<\/p>\n
NNPC said the discount was intended to provide practical relief to customers, acknowledging that higher petrol prices affect transportation costs, business operations and household expenses.<\/p>\n
It, however, stressed that the initiative applied only to NNPC Retail outlets and did not establish a uniform national pump price or change the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.<\/p>\n
The company urged Nigerians to disregard interpretations of the discount as a return to the petrol subsidy regime, which was discontinued in May 2023.<\/p>\n
NNPC also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring reliable petroleum product supply and working with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to mitigate the effects of rising fuel prices.<\/p>\n
