When the story of constituency development is told, roads, drainage channels, streetlights, schools and other physical infrastructure usually dominate the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n They are visible. They are measurable. They can be photographed, commissioned and easily identified.<\/span><\/p>\n But there is another infrastructure that is less visible and, perhaps, more consequential \u2014 the human being.<\/span><\/p>\n It is the student who needs help to sit for an examination. The graduate looking desperately for an opportunity to begin a career. The widow struggling to provide for her family. The elderly citizen who needs assistance. The patient confronted with an unexpected medical bill. The community that needs a stronger security network to protect lives and property.<\/span><\/p>\n It is in this less visible but deeply human space that the interventions of Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, member representing Ifako-Ijaiye constituency 01 at the Lagos State House of Assembly have continued to attract attention.<\/span><\/p>\n For Adedeji, development appears to go beyond the construction of physical infrastructure. Residents need to feel protected.<\/span><\/p>\n Recognising this reality, Adedeji has also extended support to the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) to contribute to improved security within the community.<\/span><\/p>\n The intervention reflects an understanding that security is not exclusively the responsibility of government agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n While security institutions remain responsible for maintaining law and order, community stakeholders can complement their efforts by supporting initiatives that strengthen the local security architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n The Police and LNSC operate closest to the communities they serve. Improving their capacity and effectiveness can therefore contribute to a safer environment for residents and businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n In this sense, supporting security agencies is itself a form of community infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n A safe community is an economically productive community.<\/span><\/p>\n Beyond What Can Be Seen<\/span><\/p>\n There is an important distinction between physical infrastructure and human development.<\/span><\/p>\n A road can be measured in kilometres.<\/span><\/p>\n A drainage project can be measured by its length and capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n A building can be measured by its size.<\/span><\/p>\n But how does one measure the value of a student who receives an opportunity to continue his or her education?<\/span><\/p>\n How does one quantify the impact of a graduate who gets a first job?<\/span><\/p>\n How does one place a monetary value on medical assistance that enables a patient to receive timely treatment?<\/span><\/p>\n How does one measure the dignity restored to a widow who receives support when she needs it most?<\/span><\/p>\n These are the questions that complicate the conventional understanding of constituency development.<\/span><\/p>\n They also explain why Adedeji\u2019s interventions deserve to be examined beyond the traditional infrastructure narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n A Constituency Is Built Through People<\/span><\/p>\n Ifako-Ijaiye, like other rapidly developing parts of Lagos, faces a range of socioeconomic challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n Its residents need infrastructure, but they also need opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n They need good roads, but they also need education.<\/span><\/p>\n They need functional public institutions, but they also need healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n They need economic activity, but they also need security.<\/span><\/p>\n And they need leaders who understand that these issues are interconnected.<\/span><\/p>\n The pattern of interventions associated with Adedeji reflects this broader understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n Free GCE and JAMB support since 2019. Ceremonies are held. Plaques are unveiled. Headlines fade.<\/span><\/p>\n But people remember opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n A young person may remember the support that helped him or her sit for an examination.<\/span><\/p>\n A graduate may remember the person who helped create a pathway into employment.<\/span><\/p>\n A family may remember assistance received during a difficult medical situation.<\/span><\/p>\n A widow may remember being supported when she needed help.<\/span><\/p>\n An elderly person may remember that the community did not forget them.<\/span><\/p>\n These memories constitute a different kind of political legacy \u2014 one written not on plaques or signposts, but in people’s lives.<\/span><\/p>\n For Hon.
