{"id":25321,"date":"2025-10-29T06:28:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T06:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=25321"},"modified":"2025-10-29T06:29:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T06:29:52","slug":"wole-soyinka-confirms-u-s-visa-revocation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=25321","title":{"rendered":"Wole Soyinka Confirms U.S. Visa Revocation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">The United States has revoked the B1\/B2 visa of Nigeria\u2019s Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka \u2014 a decision he describes as a \u201cwitch-hunt\u201d likely tied to his long-standing criticism of former U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">A B1\/B2 visa is a temporary non-immigrant visa granted for business or tourism purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Soyinka revealed the revocation during a news conference themed <\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u201cUnending Saga: Idi Amin in Whiteface!\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> held at Kongi\u2019s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos, on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He told reporters that the U.S. Consulate in Lagos offered no explanation for the action, which he discovered through an official letter sent six days earlier from the Non-Immigrant Visa Section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Part of the letter read:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThis letter serves as official notification by the United States Consulate General in Lagos that the non-immigrant visa listed below has been revoked pursuant to the authority contained in U.S. Department of State regulations\u2026 Additional information became available after the visa below was issued.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The 91-year-old literary icon said he was shocked by the development, insisting he had never violated any law to warrant such a sanction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI\u2019m still looking into my past history\u2026 I don\u2019t have any criminal record or even a misdemeanour. Have I ever misbehaved toward the United States of America? Have I gone against the law anywhere?\u201d he asked rhetorically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Despite the disappointment, Soyinka maintained a calm demeanour and stressed that he harboured no resentment toward Americans or their government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI will continue to welcome any American to my home if they have anything legitimate to do with me,\u201d he said, reaffirming his commitment to speak out against racism and injustice globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Soyinka also revealed that he declined an invitation from the U.S. Consulate for a visa re-interview scheduled for September 11, 2025, describing it as suspicious and poorly timed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI thought it was a scam because I had never received such a letter before. When I later confirmed its authenticity, I still refused to go \u2014 holding such an interview on September 11, a date of deep, sober reflection in America, was totally inappropriate,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">The playwright likened the U.S. administration behind the decision to a \u201cwhite Idi Amin,\u201d an apparent reference to Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">It will be recalled that Soyinka had, in December 2016, torn his U.S. Green Card in protest after Trump\u2019s electoral victory \u2014 fulfilling a promise he made before the polls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI have no visa; I am banned, obviously, from the United States.
