women\u2019s health and education gaps<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The First Lady of Nigeria, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Senator Oluremi Tinubu<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, has called for stronger collaborations and partnerships to enhance healthcare systems, educational access, and family well-being across Nigeria and Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">She made the call at the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">12th Merck Foundation First Ladies Initiative Committee Meeting<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> held in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Banjul, The Gambia<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, where African First Ladies convened to discuss key health and social issues affecting women and children across the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Highlighting some of the achievements of the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Senator Tinubu said the foundation continues to uplift families through programmes focused on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">health, education, economic empowerment, social investment<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">agriculture<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThese programmes are designed to complement the efforts of my husband, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, towards ensuring a better life for Nigerian families,\u201d she stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">According to her, the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">RHI<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> has so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Donated $2 million (naira equivalent)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to support <\/span><span class=\"s1\">advocacy and treatment for cervical cancer and tuberculosis<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, in a bid to eliminate both diseases by <\/span><span class=\"s1\">2030<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, in collaboration with local and international partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Awarded annual scholarships to 47 indigent university students<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for three consecutive years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Partnered with the Federal Ministry of Education<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to award <\/span><span class=\"s1\">1,500 additional scholarships<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to indigent students pursuing <\/span><span class=\"s1\">undergraduate and postgraduate degrees<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Nigerian First Lady commended <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Senator Rasha Kelej<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, CEO of the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Merck Foundation<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, for the foundation\u2019s continuous support in advancing healthcare capacity in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Through the Merck Foundation, Nigerian doctors have benefited from:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">14 scholarships<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for a one-year diploma in fertility and embryology, and a two-year master\u2019s degree in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">sexual and reproductive care<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">women\u2019s health<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">family medicine<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">40 scholarships<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> for one-year diploma and two-year master\u2019s programmes in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">diabetes and endocrinology<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">preventive cardiovascular medicine<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">cardiology<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">obesity and weight management<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\"> \u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">3 scholarships<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in <\/span><span class=\"s1\">oncology research<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">medical oncology<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">pain management<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Senator Tinubu expressed optimism that the collaboration between <\/span><span class=\"s1\">RHI<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Merck Foundation<\/span><span class=\"s2\">will continue to grow, expanding the reach and impact of these life-changing interventions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Banjul meeting brought together several <\/span><span class=\"s1\">African First Ladies<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, including those from <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The Gambia (host nation)<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Central African Republic<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Burundi<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Senegal<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Each shared updates on their respective interventions aimed at promoting <\/span><span class=\"s1\">women\u2019s and children\u2019s health<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">education<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">economic empowerment<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Senator Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to collaborative action, emphasizing that partnerships built on shared values have the power to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">transform communities and inspire lasting change<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The <\/span><span
