{"id":24842,"date":"2025-08-03T11:46:33","date_gmt":"2025-08-03T11:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=24842"},"modified":"2025-08-03T11:47:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-03T11:47:25","slug":"pfan-demands-state-honours-as-peter-rufais-burial-set-for-august-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=24842","title":{"rendered":"PFAN Demands State Honours as Peter Rufai\u2019s Burial Set for August 22"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The family of late Nigerian football legend <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Peter Rufai<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> has announced that the iconic former Super Eagles goalkeeper will be laid to rest on <\/span><span class=\"s1\">August 22<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, as the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN)<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> calls on authorities to accord him a state burial befitting his legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">PFAN has appealed to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to rally behind the Rufai family and ensure the burial is \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s1\">carnival-like and befitting<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201d for a man who served Nigeria with honour and dedication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cPeter Rufai deserves nothing less than a carnival-like, befitting burial from the people of Nigeria and our great country,\u201d PFAN said in a statement, noting the late goalkeeper\u2019s patriotic service and unwavering commitment to the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The association lamented what it described as <\/span><span class=\"s1\">neglect of the family<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> following initial condolence visits and urged key stakeholders to \u201cbrace up and support\u201d the Rufai family during this emotional period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">On <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Thursday, July 30<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, a PFAN delegation visited the family residence at <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Amuwo Odofin Estate, Lagos<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to offer condolences. Among those present were ex-internationals <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Clement Temile<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (PFAN 1st Vice President), <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Taju Disu<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (Chairman, PFAN Lagos chapter), <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Princewill Gbogbodu<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> (National Treasurer), and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Tajudeen Ajide<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, a former chairman of Surulere Local Government and PFAN Board of Trustees member who led the delegation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Ajide assured the family of PFAN\u2019s commitment and expressed optimism that the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lagos State Government<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, along with the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Federal Government<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, would extend meaningful support through the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">National Sports Commission<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">NFF<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Speaking on behalf of the family, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Dele Rufai<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> expressed heartfelt gratitude for the visit, describing it as timely and deeply comforting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">As part of the burial activities, PFAN is collaborating with the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lagos State Sports Commission<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Lagos State Football Association<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to organise a <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Valedictory Football Match<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in Rufai\u2019s honour. All football clubs and academies across Lagos are expected to participate in full official kits. The match is scheduled for <\/span><span class=\"s1\">August 22<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> and will take place at either the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Teslim Balogun Stadium<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> or <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Onikan Stadium<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, pending final approval for the lying in state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">All divisions of the <\/span><span class=\"s1\">All Stars International Football Clubs in Lagos State<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> are expected to attend the tribute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Peter Rufai, who recently passed away, remains one of Nigeria\u2019s most celebrated goalkeepers.
