The family of late Nigerian football legend <\/span>Peter Rufai<\/span> has announced that the iconic former Super Eagles goalkeeper will be laid to rest on <\/span>August 22<\/span>, as the <\/span>Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN)<\/span> calls on authorities to accord him a state burial befitting his legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

PFAN has appealed to <\/span>Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu<\/span>, <\/span>National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko<\/span>, and <\/span>Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau<\/span> to rally behind the Rufai family and ensure the burial is \u201c<\/span>carnival-like and befitting<\/span>\u201d for a man who served Nigeria with honour and dedication.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeter Rufai deserves nothing less than a carnival-like, befitting burial from the people of Nigeria and our great country,\u201d PFAN said in a statement, noting the late goalkeeper\u2019s patriotic service and unwavering commitment to the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The association lamented what it described as <\/span>neglect of the family<\/span> following initial condolence visits and urged key stakeholders to \u201cbrace up and support\u201d the Rufai family during this emotional period.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>Thursday, July 30<\/span>, a PFAN delegation visited the family residence at <\/span>Amuwo Odofin Estate, Lagos<\/span> to offer condolences. Among those present were ex-internationals <\/span>Clement Temile<\/span> (PFAN 1st Vice President), <\/span>Taju Disu<\/span> (Chairman, PFAN Lagos chapter), <\/span>Princewill Gbogbodu<\/span> (National Treasurer), and <\/span>Tajudeen Ajide<\/span>, a former chairman of Surulere Local Government and PFAN Board of Trustees member who led the delegation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ajide assured the family of PFAN\u2019s commitment and expressed optimism that the <\/span>Lagos State Government<\/span>, along with the <\/span>Federal Government<\/span>, would extend meaningful support through the <\/span>National Sports Commission<\/span> and the <\/span>NFF<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the family, <\/span>Dele Rufai<\/span> expressed heartfelt gratitude for the visit, describing it as timely and deeply comforting.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the burial activities, PFAN is collaborating with the <\/span>Lagos State Sports Commission<\/span> and the <\/span>Lagos State Football Association<\/span> to organise a <\/span>Valedictory Football Match<\/span> in Rufai\u2019s honour. All football clubs and academies across Lagos are expected to participate in full official kits. The match is scheduled for <\/span>August 22<\/span> and will take place at either the <\/span>Teslim Balogun Stadium<\/span> or <\/span>Onikan Stadium<\/span>, pending final approval for the lying in state.<\/span><\/p>\n

All divisions of the <\/span>All Stars International Football Clubs in Lagos State<\/span> are expected to attend the tribute.<\/span><\/p>\n
