In a stunning political shift, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state have dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n
The mass defection was announced on Wednesday in Asaba by Senator James Manager after a marathon six-hour meeting at Government House.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll PDP members in the state\u2014including the governor, former Governor Okowa, the Speaker, the state party chairman, all local government chairmen\u2014have agreed to move to the APC,\u201d Manager declared. \u201cWe cannot continue to be in a sinking boat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Confirming the development, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, described the move as a strategic pivot to secure continued development and political relevance in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn taking that decision, we concluded that leaving the PDP was very necessary for us to build a Delta every citizen will be proud of,\u201d Aniagwu said. \u201cThe state of the PDP is akin to that palm wine whose taste has changed \u2014 and there was a need for us to change the drinking party.\u201d<\/p>\n
