{"id":23062,"date":"2025-03-24T11:08:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T11:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=23062"},"modified":"2025-03-24T11:08:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T11:08:40","slug":"soyinka-defends-silence-on-tinubus-performance-says-he-wont-be-stampeded-into-assessing-current-administration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=23062","title":{"rendered":"Soyinka Defends Silence on Tinubu\u2019s Performance, Says He Won\u2019t Be Stampeded Into Assessing Current Administration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has declared that he will not be pressured into publicly assessing President Bola Tinubu\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Speaking on <\/span><span class=\"s3\">Channels Television\u2019s The Morning Brief<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> on Monday, Soyinka emphasized that he would only evaluate the government when he deemed it necessary, not under external pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The literary icon was responding to critics who accused him of failing to fulfill his promise to give an opinion on Tinubu\u2019s government one year after its inauguration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cPeople should stop trying to work on my timetable for me. I have not swallowed an alarm clock,\u201d Soyinka said. \u201cI don\u2019t see why I should put my alarm on and say, \u2018One year has passed, now I must make an assessment,\u2019 if there is nothing I feel like talking about and if I am busy elsewhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He further stressed that assessing a government was a collective responsibility, highlighting the efforts of other activists and commentators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThis business of \u2018you haven\u2019t come to do this,\u2019 I don\u2019t understand it. Other people are doing the same; this is a collective effort. The Falanas speak consistently. The Baiyewus speak consistently. The Sowores come out and try to lead demonstrations. It\u2019s a collective effort,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Soyinka questioned why he was being singled out for a public assessment, noting that he had never followed such a pattern with past administrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe one-year mark means you have a right to ask, and I have a responsibility to respond when you call me on certain issues. But if you expect me to call a press conference and say, \u2018One year is up, let\u2019s make an assessment,\u2019 I\u2019d ask\u2014did I do that with Jonathan? Did I do that with Buhari? Did I do that with Obasanjo? Did I do that with anybody?
