The Democracy and Good Government Watch Initiative, a coalition of civil society organizations, wishes to express its profound gratitude and commend the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for its swift and proactive actions in addressing critical consumer issues.<\/p>\n
The coalition highlighted the dynamic leadership of Dr. Tunji Bello, under whom the FCCPC has shown renewed vigor and an unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers.<\/p>\n
This proactive approach has provided much-needed relief and fostered a sense of inclusivity among the Nigerian populace.<\/p>\n
Within just two weeks, the FCCPC has demonstrated remarkable responsiveness by addressing pressing concerns, including the following:<\/p>\n
1.Intervention in the Planned Phase-Out of Unistar Meters<\/p>\n
The coalition raised alarms regarding the proposed phasing out of \u201cobsolete Unistar meters\u201d by Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs), which sparked widespread public apprehension. The FCCPC\u2019s prompt response in insisting on the protection of consumers\u2019 rights is highly commendable.<\/p>\n
The Commission\u2019s intervention ensured that the financial burden of the phase-out would not unjustly fall on consumers but instead be absorbed by the DISCOs, as required by regulation.<\/p>\n
2.Response to Incessant Downtime in Internet Banking Services<\/p>\n
Persistent failures in internet banking services provided by several Nigerian banks have caused significant distress to consumers. Upon raising concerns, the coalition observed with satisfaction the FCCPC\u2019s quick response.<\/p>\n
By invoking provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018\u2014specifically Sections 17(j), (l), (s), 116(2), 124, 125, 138, and 155\u2014the FCCPC has reaffirmed its commitment to consumer protection, bringing relief to banking customers nationwide.<\/p>\n
The coalition applauds Dr. Tunji Bello\u2019s vibrant and forward-thinking leadership, which underscores the FCCPC\u2019s commitment to prioritizing consumer rights and ensuring fairness in Nigeria\u2019s market space.<\/p>\n
