The Julius Abure-led Labour Party has unveiled an ambitious plan to grow its membership to over 20 million through an online registration and revalidation exercise, signaling its readiness for the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n
In a communiqu\u00e9 issued on Monday by the party\u2019s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, following a virtual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the opposition party also announced a timetable for ward and state congresses.<\/p>\n
These congresses, scheduled for February to March 2025, will run concurrently with the membership drive.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn its desire to exceed a membership size of 20 million before the 2027 general election, NEC approved the need to expand the membership of the party, and all members are required to revalidate their memberships. New members can register online,\u201d the communiqu\u00e9 stated.<\/p>\n
The registration drive, which begins immediately and runs until January 31, 2025, aims to update the Ward register in preparation for the upcoming congresses.<\/p>\n
Aspiring ward leaders have been urged to begin their campaigns.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the party has constituted an Electoral Reform Committee, underscoring its commitment to advancing electoral transparency in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Julius Abure, the Labour Party\u2019s National Chairman, described the committee as a response to the challenges the party faced in the 2023 general election.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Labour Party was a major victim in the 2023 general election, and we are determined to pursue comprehensive electoral reforms to ensure future elections are credible, fair, and transparent,\u201d Abure said.<\/p>\n
The committee, chaired by Benedict Etanabene, with Okey Joe as Co-Chair and Dudu Manuga as Secretary, is expected to deliver its report within eight weeks.<\/p>\n
Abure reiterated the party\u2019s resolve to reposition itself as Nigeria\u2019s largest political movement, adding, \u201cNigeria has remained in the doldrums for too long, and we are determined to rescue the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
