The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has denounced the re-election of Julius Abure as chairman of the Labour Party (LP), labeling it “an illegitimate act.”<\/p>\n
Abure secured his re-election during the party’s national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra state, with Ikechukwu Emetu, the deputy governor of Abia state and convention chairman, announcing his victory. <\/span><\/p>\n The convention drew attendance from party chairpersons representing all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), members of state and national assemblies, and representatives from local government areas (LGAs). <\/span><\/p>\n Abure’s re-election occurred despite protests by NLC members who picketed the LP secretariat in Abuja a week earlier. <\/span><\/p>\n The NLC demonstrators had called for the postponement of the party’s national convention, citing allegations of financial mismanagement by Abure and disregard for NLC leadership, along with unilateral attempts to organize a convention in violation of the party’s constitution. <\/span><\/p>\n In response to Abure’s re-election, Benson Upah, NLC’s spokesperson, condemned the entire process as a sham, stating, “It is an illegality, a nullity. <\/span><\/p>\n The whole exercise was a charade!
