{"id":16404,"date":"2023-10-31T21:32:24","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T21:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=16404"},"modified":"2023-10-31T21:32:24","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T21:32:24","slug":"tinubu-sets-up-constitutional-review-committee-on-police-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=16404","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu Sets Up Constitutional Review Committee On Police Reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">President Bola Tinubu has set up a constitutional review committee to carry out \u201ccomprehensive\u201d police reforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, announced the development while speaking to State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the Nigeria police council chaired by Tinubu on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The council at the meeting confirmed Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive inspector-general of police (IGP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">According to Mohammed, members of the committee include Ibrahim Geidam, minister of police affairs; Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA); Solomon Arase, chairman of the police service commission (PSC); and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, governor of Kwara and chairman of the Nigerian Governors\u2019 Forum (NGF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe confirmation of the IGP prompted further discussion on the Nigeria Police Force and the president has formed a special committee to look at all the gaps in Nigeria\u2019s 1999 constitution with a view to bring harmony and synergy, closing technology and manpower to the Nigerian police force,\u201d Mohammed said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe committee comprises the minister of police affairs, NSA, chairman of PSC, and the chairman of the NGF. They will work together with a view to make sure that the Nigeria Police is reformed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Also speaking, Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun, said the council observed that no meaningful reforms have taken place in the police since its creation in 1861.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He added that the committee would develop ideas that would lead to reforms that would characterize the new Nigeria police force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe newly confirmed IGP is adequately prepared, his CV is extremely rich, very experienced, intellectually and practically,\u201d Abiodun said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cHe also addressed us as a council on the state of policing in Nigeria, among other things that he highlighted he spoke about the need for technology-driven policing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe need for community-based policing, the need to ensure that required budgetary provision is provided for community-based policing which has been proven to be very effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe issue of funding also came up and this committee of four to five people will look at these issues that borders on reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWe observed that there have been no meaningful reforms since the establishment of the Nigeria police force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Bola Tinubu has set up a constitutional review committee to carry out \u201ccomprehensive\u201d police reforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":16405,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[7967,7968,7042],"class_list":["post-16404","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-constitutional-review-committee","tag-police-reforms","tag-president-bola-ahmed-tinubu"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16404"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=16404"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16404\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":16406,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/16404\/revisions\/16406"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/16405"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=16404"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=16404"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=16404"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
