{"id":14419,"date":"2023-07-22T10:46:45","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T10:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=14419"},"modified":"2023-07-22T10:47:42","modified_gmt":"2023-07-22T10:47:42","slug":"ahf-applauds-continued-effort-to-combat-malaria-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=14419","title":{"rendered":"AHF Applauds Continued Effort To Combat Malaria In Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-14422\" src=\"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2A7A0972-34CA-4303-8512-722528D46A96-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2A7A0972-34CA-4303-8512-722528D46A96-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2A7A0972-34CA-4303-8512-722528D46A96-75x75.jpeg 75w, https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2A7A0972-34CA-4303-8512-722528D46A96-350x350.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2A7A0972-34CA-4303-8512-722528D46A96.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>As the World Health Organization, Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF recently announced the allocation of 18 million doses of the first-ever malaria vaccine (RTS, SA\/AS01) to 12 African countries, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (<a href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aidshealth.org%2F&amp;esheet=53468794&amp;newsitemid=20230719997548&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=AHF&amp;index=1&amp;md5=93d36b4a7a548127b28de428bc8b7da9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s3\">AHF<\/span><\/a>) commends the decision as a positive step forward in the fight against one of the deadliest diseases on the continent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">This announcement follows the successful pilot of the RTS, SA\/AS01 in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi under the Malaria Vaccine Implementation Program (MVIP) since 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.who.int%2Fnews%2Fitem%2F05-07-2023-18-million-doses-of-first-ever-malaria-vaccine-allocated-to-12-african-countries-for-2023-2025--gavi--who-and-unicef&amp;esheet=53468794&amp;newsitemid=20230719997548&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=WHO%2C&amp;index=2&amp;md5=b6ef62f7fa58d7bf2a7100aa012edd14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s3\">WHO,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the vaccine, which has been administered to over 1.7 million children across the three pilot countries, has shown promising results in reducing severe malaria and death among children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe decision to allocate such a substantial number of doses to the countries with the greatest need in terms of high risk of malaria and malaria-related deaths among children under five demonstrates a strengthened commitment to addressing malaria in Africa,\u201d said AHF Africa Bureau Chief\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Dr. Penninah Iutung<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cHowever, it is important to reiterate that efforts to combat malaria successfully require a multi-faceted approach, including the distribution of treated mosquito nets, improved access to diagnostics and treatment, ramping up vaccine production and distribution to meet the demand, and the need for technology transfer to support local vaccine manufacturing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Countries earmarked to receive the vaccines are Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DRC, Liberia, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Uganda \u2013 in addition to the pilot countries Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The first doses are expected to arrive in the respective countries during the last quarter of 2023, ahead of the rollout set for early 2024. Twenty-eight additional African countries have also expressed interest in receiving the RTS, SA\/AS01 vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">AHF launched the Vaccinate Our World campaign during COVID-19 to help ensure all countries have equitable access to lifesaving vaccines and other health commodities during the pandemic.
