{"id":14285,"date":"2023-07-12T12:03:07","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T12:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=14285"},"modified":"2023-07-12T12:03:07","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T12:03:07","slug":"six-land-borders-have-been-opened-customs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theblogonline.com\/?p=14285","title":{"rendered":"Six Land Borders Have Been Opened &#8211; Customs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">The acting comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Wale Adeniyi, has said that not all borders in the country have been reopened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">He made the clarification on Tuesday while speaking to state house correspondents after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Villa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Former President Muhammadu Buhari had, in August 2019, shut all land borders in the country as part of efforts to curtail smuggling and boost local production of rice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">On December 6, 2020, Buhari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecable.ng\/breaking-buhari-orders-reopening-of-four-land-borders\/amp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s1\">ordered<\/span><\/a> the immediate reopening of four land borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Speaking on the issue, Adeniyi said while selected strategic borders were reopened in 2022, a review is currently underway to assess the objectives of the closure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWell, it is not true that all Nigerian borders have been opened. The status quo ante still exists in the borders. If you remember that the borders were completely shut down in 2018 up until 2022 when some selected strategic borders were reopened, that is still the situation as we speak,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cAnd this was why we had an ad hoc arrangement of a special unit coordinated by the office of the NSA (national security adviser) to enforce that border closure. But as we speak, about five of them have been reopened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cFour were initially reopened and two more were opened after that. And that is still the situation. There are ongoing processes to review this situation against the objective of the border closure itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cAnd the processes are not yet completed.
